Microsoft Excel for HSE Data Analytics – Standard Class

With Excel, you’ll learn how to:

  • Capture, clean, and manage safety data efficiently
  • Build dashboards to analyze real-world data from HSE activities
  • Automate repetitive reports with formulas and pivot tables

  • Analyze, communicate and prove the business value of safety
  • Make data-backed decisions that improve workplace performance

⏰  A 20-hour course structure for 10 days

Day #1

  • Introduction: Introduction to data, data analytics in health and safety, sources of HSE data, examples of dirty HSE datasets, and introduction to Microsoft Excel—2 Hours

Day #2 

  • Getting Started: Introduction to Excel tables, conditional formatting, basic charts, slicers, filters, sorting formatting charts and slicers, and creating a simple dashboard with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #3 

  • Summarizing Data: Introduction to Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, Slicers, Timelines, and creating a simple dashboard with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #4 

  • Controlling Data: Introduction to Data Validation, Checklist, and use of Developer features (Button, Combo Box, Spin Box, List Box & Macro) with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #5 

  • Scratching the Surface: Basic formulas, working with aggregate functions, logical functions (IF, IFS, SUMIF, COUNTIF, SUMIFS, and COUNTIFS), Date and Text Functions with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #6 

  • Working like a Data Savvy: Advanced formulas, working with lookup functions (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, X-LOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH) with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #7 

  • The Heart of Data Analytics: Introduction to Power Query, Power Pivot, the process of ETL (extract, transform, and load), data modeling (star schema & snowflake schema) with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #8 

  • Understanding DAX: Introduction to DAX and the common DAX functions used in HSE (SUM, AVERAGE, DISTINCTCOUNT, COUNTROWS, COUNT, CALCULATE, etc.) with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #9 

  • Leveling up Data Visualization: Data visualization with Excel, wireframing with PowerPoint, DAX measures for HSE Key Performance Indicators, with practice HSE datasets —2 Hours

Day #10

  • Becoming a Data Pro: Capstone Project: Creating a Dashboard using the relevant Excel functions and DAX measures in Microsoft Excel for the capstone project in HSE—2 Hours

🧰 Essential requirements:

  • HSE Professional or Enthusiast
  • Windows Laptop
  • Additional Screen (at least Phone)
  • Microsoft Excel 2013 or Later Versions (Microsoft 365 for X-LOOKUP function)
  • Microsoft Teams (option to join via browser)

NB: A daily video recording (approx. 500 MB) file is shared after each session.
